The atmosphere we live in is pretty negative right now. Blame-shifting, making excuses, and complaining are everywhere. Our society has become even more critical and fearful, reeling from one crisis to the next. A pandemic has shaken the health and wealth of nations. Social issues sparked riots and spread to other countries. Yet in the midst of it all, Thanksgiving Day comes as a positive event in a negative world.

God Is Our Helper

Psalm 30:10 (NKJV)

10 Hear, O Lord, and have mercy on me; Lord, be my helper!

This Thanksgiving, we need to be thankful that God has helped us! Throughout the Bible, He continually helps His people. The writer of Hebrews 13:5–6 (NIV 1984) echoes what the writers said many centuries before (Deut. 31:6; Ps. 118:6–7), and we can say now: “God has said, ‘Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.’ So we say with confidence, ‘The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?’ ”

How has God helped us? He gave us His Son and provided the Word and the Holy Spirit. Angels are available to us. The Name of Jesus has been given to us along with His power and authority! He gives us favor and grace and a place in His family. God helped us before we ever turned our lives over to Him, and He helps us now.

God Is Our Turnaround Master

Psalm 30:11 (NKJV)

11 You have turned for me my mourning into dancing; You have put off my sackcloth and clothed me with gladness.

We have faced situations that justified tears and sorrow, but God turned it around! Don’t walk away from that without any expression of thanks. When facing a challenge, immediately respond, “Lord, You are my helper! You will turn this around!” Circumstances are never the final word. God is the turnaround master and can transform a midnight hour into a moment of deliverance.

What we see around us is changeable. “Therefore we do not lose heart. . . . For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal” (2 Cor. 4:16–18 NIV 1984).

When people know and confess who they are in christ and take advantage of that fact, they cannot fail in their christian life.

God Is Our Source

Psalm 30:12 (NKJV)

12 To the end that my glory may sing praise to You and not be silent. O Lord my God, I will give thanks to You forever.

Thanksgiving is a time for counting our blessings. It’s more than turkeys and food or
remembering the pilgrims. It’s a time to say, “Lord, thank You.” Let’s be thankful that our God can turn tragedy into triumph. We need to express gratitude that He is our Peace and learn to concentrate on thankfulness for what we already have.

Every day of the year, may we remember to let our hearts sing and praise God for what He has done for us. In the middle of abundance and blessing, know that we had help to get where we are. And in the midst of trouble, let us not forget that the Lord is our Helper!

May we never become so “dignified” that we think it is out of character to give thanks to God. Stay focused on God’s majesty and greatness. He is an awesome God! And He is our Helper. Let’s never fail to say, “Thank You!”
