“ ‘The Spirit of the Lord God is upon Me, because the Lord has anointed Me to preach good tidings to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound.’ ”

THE PHRASE, “the opening of the prison,” is God’s figurative way of saying that we have been released from the bondage of Satan. That includes sin, sickness, disease, and torment—everything that is involved with Satan’s prison house.
The prison door was opened through the redemptive act of Jesus Christ. And whatever we need—spiritually, mentally, emotionally, or financially—has been provided by that act.
The Truth Sets You Free
Even though the prison door is open, the devil has been successful at keeping countless people inside. Many of them have accepted Christ as their Savior and have received salvation. They have received the spiritual benefits of the redemptive plan of God.
But the devil has kept many of these Christians hoodwinked regarding the physical inheritance that is theirs. He has said to them, “Oh yes, that’s all part of it. But it’s in the sweet by-and-by that you can experience the power of God, healing, and all the other benefits included in your salvation. One of these days—when it’s all over—then these things can be yours.”
Why did Jesus open the prison door for us? According to Moffatt’s translation of Isaiah 61:1, it was “to tell prisoners they are free, to tell captives they are released.”
How did Jesus open the prison door for us? By bearing the punishment for our sins. We see that in Isaiah chapter 53.
Young’s Literal Translation of the Holy Bible records the last part of Isaiah 53:6 as “Jehovah hath caused to meet on him, the punishment of us all.”
In Deuteronomy chapter 28, all sickness is listed among the punishments. And God tells us in Galatians 3:13 that we have been redeemed from those punishments.
In Rotherham’s translation of Isaiah 53:10 we read, “He laid on him sickness.” Matthew 8:17 (NKJV) says, “ ‘He Himself took our infirmities and bore our sicknesses.’ ”

The Debt Is Paid

The verdict had been reached—man sinned and fell short of the glory of God. A great redemption would be required if man was ever going to fellowship with God again.
Thank God, Jesus stepped up and said, “I’ll endure the pain of the cross. I’ll endure the stripes on My back. I’ll endure the crown of thorns on My head. I’ll endure the shameful death of sin and disease so mankind can be free.”
Today we don’t have to suffer, because Jesus Christ suffered for us!
How then are we going to get out of this prison? The first and most important thing is to know that the door is open!
If you think you are locked in a room but have not checked the door, you could sit there for hours wishing you could get out. You may have heard a “click” when the door closed. And you simply accepted what you heard as the door locking instead of walking over and checking it.
Faith must know what the Word says before it can act.
What did Jesus say in Luke 4:18 (NKJV)? “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He has anointed Me to preach.” Moffatt’s translation of the Old Testament counterpart of this verse reads, “The Lord Eternal . . . has consecrated me, and sent me with good news for wretched men . . . to tell prisoners they are free, to tell captives they are released” (Isa. 61:1).
Bound No More
Jesus is saying, “I have opened the prison doors. You don’t have to be bound anymore.”
Jesus also used the word bound when a crippled woman came into the synagogue. He said, “ ‘Ought not this woman, being a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan has bound . . . be loosed from this bond on the Sabbath?’ ” (Luke 13:16 NKJV).
Satan is the one who bound mankind in sickness. But Jesus redeemed us and set us free!
All sickness is called “oppression.” Acts 10:38 (NKJV) tells us, “How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him.”
Faith must be in two places before we can get out of prison. Romans 10:8 (NKJV) says that the word of faith “is near you, in your mouth and in your heart.”
What is Paul talking about? He’s saying that he speaks with his mouth the things he believes in his heart.
If our thinking is wrong, we’ll remain in prison, even if we know the door is open.
Right thinking creates right believing. And right believing creates actions that will release us from prison.
Don’t allow the enemy to deceive you with his lies any longer. Begin to renew your mind with the truth of God’s Word. Meditate on it, and speak it over your life. As you do, you’ll begin to experience the freedom that is yours in Christ.
